    Scientists from the European Federation of Associations of Health Product Manufacturers’ (EHPM) scientific network have raised serious doubts about the evidence to support the negative conclusions of a newly published meta-analysis on antioxidant supplements. The study, which was published this week in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, calls into question the health benefits of antioxidants through its meta analysis of selected clinical trials with antioxidants.
  • CRN Risk Assessments For Popular Amino Acids Published

    The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) has authored risk assessments that establish safe upper intake levels for the amino acids taurine (Tau), glutamine (Gln) and arginine (Arg) commonly used in dietary supplements. The paper, published in the April issue of the peer-reviewed journal Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, was co-authored by CRN scientists John Hathcock, Ph.D., and Andrew Shao, Ph.D., and is the latest in a series of such analyses co-authored by them.

  • Meta-analysis of Vitamins A and E, Beta Carotene and Mortality Still Flawed, Association Says

    A recently republished meta-analysis of 67 randomized trials with antioxidant supplements has reported that vitamins A and E, and beta carotene may increase mortality risk by up to 16 percent. The Natural Products Association’s Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., issued a statement regarding the report: "“The authors state that per their analysis, beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E given singly or combined with other antioxidant supplements significantly increase mortality. However, when reading the study in greater depth, it's clear that vitamin E used singly or in combination with other antioxidants had no significant effect on mortality when including all 54 trials. Vitamin A used singly or in combination with other antioxidants had no significant effect on mortality when including all 16 trials...."

    Capros(R), an antioxidant ingredient developed from Phyllanthus emblica, the Indian Gooseberry was involved in a mouse study using a broad panel of in vivo assays, with results showing that this ingredient has better or comparable antioxidant potential as other ingredients such as grape seed extract.
