Cargill is utilizing consumer insight, regulatory and scientific expertise to develop and market products that help customers capitalize on the growing demand for healthier consumer packaged goods. We provide ingredient solutions relevant to some of today's most pressing health concerns, including heart health, bone health, digestive health and general wellness. Products are also being developed that may provide health benefits to those with diabetes and obesity.
Some of Cargill’s health-promoting and specialty sweeteners include:
- CoroWise™ Naturally Sourced Cholesterol Reducer™ brand plant sterols are now an ingredient in a growing number of foods, beverages, and supplements. Plant sterols have been clinically shown to lower bad cholesterol, are backed by an FDA heart health claim and are recommended by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
- Oliggo-Fiber™ inulin, known as the “invisible fiber,” can be incorporated into almost any food or beverage without affecting taste or texture. Research indicates that inulin may enhance dietary calcium absorption, particularly among preteens and postmenopausal women. Inulin also is recognized as a prebiotic ingredient that supports the natural, healthful bacteria in the lower GI tract.
- Treha™ trehalose is a multi-functional, fully caloric carbohydrate that stabilizes proteins and provides energy with all the functional benefits of sucrose and approximately 45% of its sweetening power. Trehalose is found in nature in hundreds of plants and animals and is consumed as part of a normal diet in mushrooms, honey and foods produced using baker’s and brewer’s yeast.
- Xtend® sucromalt is derived from sucrose and maltose and has clean, sweet taste. It provides the full energy of both glucose and fructose, but is released over a longer period of time. Because it is a syrup, it allows food and beverage manufacturers to apply the benefits of a liquid sweetener with slow energy release and low glycaemic response to an even wider range of applications. Additionally, Xtend® Sucromalt can replace multiple sweeteners and bulking agents in many formulations. This allows food manufacturers to have a simpler ingredient label and potentially reduce the amount of simple sugars in the formulation.
- Zerose™ erythritol is an organic, natural, zero calorie bulk sweetener. It is suitable for weight management, sugar avoidance, and dental health. Zerose™ erythritol also works well with new natural intense sweeteners as well as artificial intense sweeteners to round out the sweetness profile making them more sugar-like.
- Cargill’s polyols have become essential ingredients in a wide range of food and beverage applications, both for their functional, sensorial as well as nutritional properties. They offer flexibility of functionality, while ensuring full controllability and thus consistent final performance. Cargill’s product offering includes Maltidex™ maltitol, IsoMaltidex™ isomalt, Mannidex™ mannitol, Sorbidex™ sorbitol, in addition to Zerose™ erythritol.
- Barliv™ barley betafiber, a product in commercial development, is a high purity reduced molecular weight beta-glucan soluble fiber. Barliv™ has been clinically shown to reduce cholesterol when consumed as part of a low saturated fat, low cholesterol diet.
