David B. Roll, Ph.D., Appointed Director of Dietary Supplements at USP
2002-09-05 - United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

September 5, 2002 Rockville, Maryland — The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Roger L. Williams, M.D., announced that David B. Roll, Ph.D., has joined USP as director of dietary supplements. In his new position, Roll will help oversee USP efforts in creating standards for dietary supplements.

In welcoming Roll to USP, Williams said, “David brings to USP not only numerous years of academic experience, but also USP volunteer experience that will greatly benefit our efforts to expand our initiatives in dietary supplement standards development.”

Roll comes to USP after serving as a Congressional Fellow in the office of Sen. Byron L. Dorgan (D-N.D.). Previous to his year in the Senator’s office, he was a professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Utah for more than 30 years, where he also served in several administrative positions. In addition, for more than 12 years, Roll was a member of USP’s Council of Experts (CoE). Most recently, he was chair of USP’s Expert Committee on Dietary Supplements, Non-Botanicals.

“I already have had many years of experience with USP,” Roll said, “and I accepted the position because it provides me with an excellent opportunity to assist in moving USP’s dietary supplement and Dietary Supplement Verification Program (DSVP) initiatives forward.”

Roll earned his bachelor’s of science in pharmacy from the University of Montana, and his Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from the University of Washington.
