The resveratrol in Resveratrol Synergy™ 200, which yields approximately 90% resveratrol in the trans configuration, is combined with powerful antioxidant polyphenolic compounds Quercetin, and extracts from Green Tea, Grape Seed, and Grape Skin, resulting in a potent formula for cardiovascular function and healthy aging.

Resveratrol is a plant chemical found in red grape skins and grape seeds, purple grape juice and red wine, and in smaller amounts in peanuts. Resveratrol is also found in other plants such as the roots of the Chinese medicinal herb, hu zhang (Polygonum cuspidatum) — commonly known as Japanese knotweed — which is often the source of resveratrol in supplements.

Resveratrol exists in either the cis- or trans- form. Cis- and trans-resveratrol have some biological activities in common while other activities are specific to only one form or the other. Either form can exist as free compound or attached to a sugar as a glycoside. In nature, the trans- form is most abundant. It is also the most commercially available and the most researched.

Over the past year, new studies on animals have shown that resveratrol supplementation has the same beneficial effects on longevity as a restricted-calorie diet -- specifically, up to a 40% increase in life span.

One study conducted on mice by the Harvard Medical School and the National Institute of Aging, finds that resveratrol negates the negative effects of a high-fat, high-calorie diet, a finding which experts are calling remarkable. In the study, one-year-old mice were split into the following three groups:
- a control group of mice that were fed a normal diet
- a group that was fed a high-fat (60% fat), high calorie diet
- a group that was fed the same high-fat, high-calorie diet plus resveratrol.

Within six months both groups of mice on the special diet had grown fat. However after a year, the mice which were also receiving the resveratrol seemed healthier. They did not develop the insulin resistance (a diabetes-like disease), heart disease or liver damage that their counterparts did. In addition, the group getting the resveratrol had a 31% lower risk of death. Now, mice and humans are quite different and what helps mice may not help people. Nonetheless, this is very exciting news to the aging US population, particularly when added to the existing positive body of research on resveratrol.
