Kagome Anticipate Inhibiting Effect on Atopic Dermatitis by β-Carotene and Lycopene

Kagome Co., Ltd.’s corporate planning headquarters’ research institute, through animal tests carried out during collaborative research with Professor Hide Michihiro of Hiroshima University’s School of Biomedical Sciences, has confirmed the possibility of an inhibiting effect on atopic dermatitis by β-carotene and lycopene. The content of this research was announced at the 58th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Allergology (27-29 November, Tokyo International Forum).
The results of the current research on atopic dermatitis model mice showed that the taking of β-carotene and lycopene suppressed the loss of moisture from the horny cell layer and suppressed the growth of inflammatory cells in skin. The expectation therefore is that by consuming carrots, which are high in β-carotene, and tomatoes, which are high in lycopene, a connection will be seen to the suppression of atopic dermatitis.
