STR Offers Melamine Testing in Wake of Public Concern Worldwide
2008-10-07 - STR

The recent discovery of melamine in milk powder and dairy products produced in China has raised public concern worldwide. China’s Ministry of Health reports that thousands of children have sought medical attention after consuming powdered infant formula tainted with melamine. There have also been several deaths associated with the tainted infant formula. Melamine, due to its high nitrogen content, allegedly was added to diluted milk to artificially boost protein levels. In addition to infant formula and dairy products, candy and other food products containing melamine have also been discovered in recent days and have become the subject of recalls. The Food and Drug Administration has said that no level of melamine deliberately added to a food product is legal in the United States. Medical experts report that the consumption of melamine may lead to reproductive damage, bladder or kidney stones, bladder cancer, acute kidney failure and death.

To assist manufacturers, distributors and retailers, STR is pleased to offer melamine testing of raw materials, intermediate and finished products in its Asia-Pacific and US laboratories. STR uses the HPLC/MSD, GC/MS and HPLC-UV methods to perform testing according to FDA requirements. Our hazard prevention program includes comprehensive design evaluation, safety testing, audit, inspection as well as responsible sourcing services.
