The Journal of Dietary Supplements (JDS) is a newly established peer-reviewed journal from Haworth Press. The Journal is edited by Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D., FACSM of the University of Utah and will publish its inaugural issue in Spring 2005.

The Journal of Dietary Supplements is currently inviting submissions of manuscripts on all topics related to dietary supplements, including those in the following areas:

•Original Research (e.g. effect of beta-carotene on skin antioxidant potential)
•Health Professionals Corner (e.g. common supplement/drug interactions)
•Industry Spotlight (e.g. overview of “certified seal” manufacturing programs)
•Special Topics (e.g. review of weight loss supplements)
•Educator’s (Dietician’s) Corner (e.g. what to tell your students/clients about ginkgo)
•Regulatory Corner (e.g. analysis of recent FDA/FTC actions regarding supplements)
•Book Reviews (e.g. 2-3 new publications reviewed each issue)
•Research Update (short overviews of recent interesting research published/presented in other scientific journals and proceedings/meetings)

The primary goal of the new Journal of Dietary Supplements is to go beyond the simple “presentation of research” found in existing journals to provide a much-needed forum to help encourage debate and education about dietary supplements. The JDS intends to serve multiple “clients” including those in academic, governmental, industry, healthcare, public health, and consumer education sectors. The overarching “theme” of the JDS will be “context” – meaning that research manuscripts will be solicited not as isolated pieces of information, but as composite parts of a larger picture of the supplement landscape.

The Journal of Dietary Supplements intends to hold as one of its key strengths, the goal of not merely presenting scientific information regarding dietary supplements – but also interpreting that information and placing that data within proper perspective in the larger context of the overall supplement arena. The Journal will continually endeavor to provide this ongoing “big picture perspective” with each volume – and to each category of constituents.

As an International journal, the JDS is actively seeking nominations for Advisory Board members with expertise and interest in dietary supplements as well as Associate Editors in each content area and in all geographic regions.
