Several articles including one in USA Today have commented on remarks made by FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan, speaking at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, where he indicated that, on the heels of its proposal to ban the dietary supplement ingredient ephedra, the agency is aggressively monitoring other weight-loss ingredients for potential safety concerns. McCllellan named bitter orange, aristolichic acid and usnic acid specifically.
McClellan's comments indicate that the agency plans to issue a rule which, using ephedra as the model, (if it stands up to the challenges it will likely face), can then be used for other products which FDA proves "present an unreasonable risk to health."
The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) has been quoted in a number of articles supporting additional study and research, and a Reuters Health article quoted American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) President Michael McGuffin, saying "The industry welcomes closer FDA oversight... We want the bad players removed." |
