A recently released study observes that calcium is not effective against osteoporosis, a fact known by the dietary supplement industry for many years.

Vitamin D, especially in its prohormone form as D3, is critical for the absorption of dietary calcium. Recent research has established that 1,000 I.U. of vitamin D per day is critical to maintain bone health, reduce the risk of prostate, breast and colon cancer and enhance immunity. Natto, a source of menaquinone-7 (MK-7), a traditional Japanese food that is made from fermented soybeans, contains the very special form of Vitamin K2 that stimulates the synthesis of the GLA protein in bones. Epidemiological data supports its role in reducing cardiovascular risk as well. Women consuming natto exhibit significantly higher bone mineral density and fewer osteoporotic fractures.
Flax is also traditionally associated with bone health – most notably from the lignans – which are typically abundant in flaxseed. However, flax lignans are far more than just fiber – they are phytoestrogens. One reason that eating fruits, vegetables and legumes promotes health and reduces the risk of cancer is that phytoestrogens found in these foods help protect us from environmental toxins. The same can be said for flax lignans, especially secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG) flax lignans. SDG lignans activate osteoblasts, the cells that build bone.
Curcumin has also been added to the new Ultra Bone-Up formulation. Curcumin has been shown to reduce the activation of osteoclasts, the cells that tear bone down.
Finally, methyl B12 was added to reduce homocysteine, an amino acid for which elevated levels are associated with osteoporosis
