New Orleans, June 29, 2008 — “Do you know that we are now the fourth largest flavor supplier in the US, and that we will have fully integrated our recently acquired Chr. Hansen’s Seasonings and Flavor business by the last quarter of this year?”, asked Dr. Heinz Juergen Bertram, Global President, Flavors & Nutrition, at a presentation to customers and the press at the 2008 IFT Annual Meeting & Expo in New Orleans. Dr. Bertram and Emmanuel Laroche, Vice President, Marketing Services & Sensory Consumer Science North America, were among the Symrise flavor executives who were on hand, enthusiastically telling the industry about the impact of the acquisition, which was finalized on April 25, 2008. “We are focused on key growth categories for the next two-to-three years”, said Dr. Bertram, “combining our already established strengths in Citrus, Vanilla and our Health and Wellness brand - taste for life™- with our newly acquired seasonings and dairy flavor technology assets.” Dr. Bertram added, “Our strengths are evident in the core competencies we now bring to our customers, in conjunction with our mission of providing total flavor solutions. Just look at what we offer: expertise in vanilla, savory, seasonings, dairy flavor and citrus technologies; an extensive encapsulation portfolio; application technology; technological support; and global sensory, consumer insight and marketing teams. The synergy of our marketing and technological core competence has enhanced our ability to provide total flavor solutions to our customers.” Emmanuel Laroche talked about Symrise’s expanded portfolio of flavors and flavor technology, gained through the substantial meat, snack and dairy flavor expertise of the acquired Chr. Hansen Flavor and Seasonings business. In the dairy segment, Symrise’s portfolio now includes enzyme-modified cheese flavors, dairy building blocks, starter distillates and a wide range of milk, cream and butter flavors. In seasonings, Symrise now has an extensive line of flavor products and technologies for snack and meat products.
It was explained that the acquisition enhances Symrise’s flavor development and applications capabilities. Adding to their existing resources, Symrise now maintains a fully functional meat laboratory. Because the meat laboratory can duplicate the operations and conditions of a full scale meat processing plant, customers will have the opportunity to test finished product runs before making the transition to their own facilities. In addition, the Applications and Development laboratories for the sweet, savory and seasonings categories have been expanded.
Dr. Bertram also cited Symrise’s expanded portfolio of North American production sites, notably a state-of-the-art seasonings center in Elyria, Ohio, which is known for its expert processing and packaging capabilities. The company’s Branchburg, New Jersey facility will continue to serve as the company’s production center for powder blending and reaction flavors. Symrise’s North American Headquarters in Teterboro, New Jersey will continue to function as the key R&D Center and liquid flavor production site. Dr. Bertram reported that a core team comprised of global and regional flavor professionals is supporting and coordinating all the activities related to the integration of the new assets into Symrise. In North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia, the lines of communication and the collaboration of each region are guided by the core team. Every operational facet of the Symrise organization - from sales, marketing and business planning through communication, supply chain, purchasing, IT/Data, legal, finance, R&D, regulatory, QC and HR - is being managed to ensure a seamless integration of resources.
