BURLINGTON, NEW JERSEY – February 17, 2005 – Michael Geiger, COO, EVP of American Casein Company (AMCO) and American Custom Drying Company (ACD), announced the recent passing of the companies’ founder and president, Richard L. Shipley, on January 30, 2005 at the age of 89.

Richard L. Shipley, an alumnus of the University of Michigan with a Masters Degree in Chemistry, founded American Casein Company in 1957. Casein, a milk protein, was a product allocated by the nation’s War Production Board in Washington D.C. where Mr. Shipley worked. He learned of its importance to adhesives manufacturers in the United States who were issued licenses to import the commodity. After the war, and having gained additional experience while managing a casein company based in the Chicago area for a dozen years, Mr. Shipley started his own company, American Casein Company.  In 1967, he founded a related business, American Custom Drying Company, when he perfected the process of spray drying casein into caseinate. ACD ultimately became a custom toll processor for drying and blending services for the food and chemical industries.  Mr. Shipley currently has 3 facilities, Burlington, NJ, the headquarters, Delmar, MD, and his most recent acquisition, Arpin, WI.  His vision for his companies will be carried out by family members currently involved with the businesses.

A memorial service has been scheduled for March 19, 2005 at 10:30 AM at Cathedral in the Woods in Medford Lakes, NJ.  Anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to:
