Also known as Brahmi, the plant has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for anxiety and for increasing intelligence and memory. Recent western clinical studies have begun to confirm some of these benefits. Australian researchers found that healthy adults (ages 18-60) taking Brahmi every day for 3 months show significant improvements in the speed at which they process visual information and consolidate memory. Tests also showed that the subject’s rate of learning and even their level of anxiety significantly improved.

In 2002, after another university in Australia reported that adults taking Brahmi daily for 3 months showed a significant increase in memory retention, a group in the U.S. decided to investigate Brahmi for mental benefits in seniors. With funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the Oregon Health Science University are conducting a placebo-controlled trial of Brahmi to see what effects the herb may have on measures of short-term memory, attention, and other mental abilities.

Findings from recent Italian studies support the traditional use of Brahmi and indicate that the plant holds potential use in the prevention or treatment of neurological disorders.
