June 11, 2008 – Saint Clair Shores, MI – Human Products Division: The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has listed its summary of opinion on four more of Albion’s bisglycinate chelates: calcium, magnesium zinc, and copper. At the request of the European Commission, the Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials in Contact with Food (AFC) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on these four mineral bisglycinates produced by Albion, and the opinion was a positive one. The panel concluded that calcium bisglycinate and magnesium bisglycinate as sources for respectively calcium and magnesium added for nutritional purposes to foods for particular nutritional uses and in food supplements was not a safety concern. Zinc bisglycinate chelate when used as a source of zinc in foods intended for the general population and in foods for particular nutritional purposes, as well as in food supplements was not of safety concern. Copper bisglycinate as a source of copper added for nutritional purposes to food supplements was not of safety concern. Earlier, the EFSA opinion was rendered for Albion’s Ferrochel® (ferrous bisglycinate chalet), as being safe for all purposes, including baby formulas. No other amino acid chelates except for Albion’s bisglycinate chelates have been accepted in this fashion by the European Union. This marks a major milestone in Albion’s history. Albion is planning to submit more dossiers in the near future.
