YourLife Brand to be Certified

The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is pleased to announce that its Verification Program for dietary supplements recently signed a second contract with Leiner Health Products (LHP) to certify the company’s YourLife® Vitamins brand.

LHP is submitting several hundred dietary supplement products for certification. These dietary supplement products are manufactured for the U.S. Military and retailers including, Clearwater, Fla.-based Eckerd Corp. and Cincinnati, Ohio-based Kroger Co.

“We are extremely honored to have Leiner sign a second contract with our Verification Program,” said John Fowler, chief operating officer at USP. “Leiner participated in the Verification Program pilot program and understands the significance of why verification is important for consumers when making a dietary supplement purchase.”

Leiner, based in Carson, Calif., is one of the nation’s largest dietary supplement manufacturers and was one of the first companies to join USP’s Verification Program. USP’s Verification Program has been certifying Costco’s Kirkland SignatureTM brand vitamin and mineral products, which are produced in part by Leiner.

“As a longstanding proponent of supplement certification, Leiner has supported USP’s Verification Program since its inception,” said Gale Bensussen, president of Leiner Health Products. “Consumers rightfully want to be assured of the integrity of their supplements. The USP certification mark not only provides consumers that assurance, it also distinguishes manufacturers who’ve raised the bar on supplement quality.” 

USP’s Verification Program was launched in November 2001 to help inform and safeguard the growing number of consumers who use dietary supplements. The program responds to the need to assure the public that dietary supplement products contain the ingredients stated on the product label.

If a product submitted to the Verification Program meets USP’s rigorous standards, it will be awarded USP’s certification mark. The mark helps assure consumers, health care professionals and supplement retailers that a product:
• Contains the declared ingredients on the product label;
• Contains the amount or strength of ingredients declared on the product label;
• Meets requirements for limits on potential contaminants; and
• Has been manufactured properly by complying with USP and proposed FDA standards for “good manufacturing practices” (GMPs).
