L-Arginine Therapy Examined in Acute Myocardial Infarction

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Vol. 295 No. 1, January 4, 2006) describes a study involving 153 subjects who had had heart attacks and continued to have symptoms of heart disease, conducted at at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. The researchers examined the effect of supplementation with L-arginine, observing that this supplementation did not reduce vascular stiffness. The trial with arginine was discontinued after six months of the planned two-year period, the researhcers comment, after six volunteers in the L-arginine group died, compared to none of those in the placebo group. The paitents were taking other medication during the course of the study.
