- New Clinical Trial on Saw Palmetto Inconsistent with Positive Results in Previous Studies
The results of a new clinical trial on the popular herb saw palmetto may confuse the public, especially men with prostate problems, according to the American Botanical Council (ABC). Mark Blumenthal, Founder and Executive Director of ABC notes, that the study appears to have been well desgined, but expressed concern that men in this trial experienced moderate to severe symptoms of BPH, although most of the previous controlled trials showing positive results and efficacy for saw palmetto were conducted on men with mild to moderate symptoms of BPH. In examining serious adverse events, ABC notes that there were twice as many serious adverse events in the placebo group as in the saw palmeto group, suggesting other serious health issues might have been present in the population.

Santa Fe Springs, CA, February 6, 2006 – Jarrow Industries, Inc, a 45,000-square-foot contract manufacturing facility, has announced it has achieved Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Registration through NSF International’s Dietary Supplement Certification program. Jarrow Industries successfully met all requirements included in NSF’s GMP Registration Program. Jarrow Industries provides a one-stop, full spectrum of services from formulation to encapsulation, tablet manufacturing, tablet coating and bottle and blister packaging of vitamins and nutritional supplement products for Jarrow Formulas and other private label customers.

GMPs are regulatory requirements that provide guidelines for necessary processes, procedures and documentation to assure the product produced has the identity, strength, composition, quality and purity it is represented to possess. NSF conducted a plant audit to verify compliance with GMPs and will conduct periodic audits at Jarrow Industries to ensure continued conformance. GMPs for the current NSF Dietary Supplements Program are included in NSF American National Standard 173 – Dietary Supplements, the only American National Standard for Dietary Supplements. Jarrow Industries GMP registration reflects their continued commitment to ensuring quality and satisfaction and gives companies confidence that their organization operates in conformance to registration certificate and is listed on the NSF website. According to Siva P. Hari, Ph.D., President and CEO, of Jarrow Industries, GMP registration is a process any reputable contract manufacturer should accomplish. “This facility was designed to be one of the highest quality supplement facilities in the United States. From day one it has always been a top priority to provide effective and affordable products and services from formulations to finished goods that are based on cGMPs.”
