White Bear Lake, MN - Cognitive impairment is often seen in otherwise healthy, non-diabetic aging men and women, due to impaired glucose tolerance and subsequent shrinking of the hippocampus, a key brain structure for learning and memory. This was the conclusion of a recent study that investigated 30 healthy middle age and elderly men and woman, ranging in age from 53 to 89, all with fasting blood glucose levels in the non-diabetic range (below 126 mg / dl), and who were given a series of tests to assess memory and overall cognition.
Dr. Antonio Convit, associate professor of Psychiatry and medical director for the Center for Brain Health at the School of Medicine, NYU Medical Center, stated, “For every person with Alzheimer’s disease, there are some eight people with memory problems sufficient to affect the quality of their lives who don’t go on to develop dementia.” Further, Dr. Convit said, “If our results are confirmed then they have significant treatment implications given that diabetes and obesity are reaching epidemic proportions in the United States and there are a large number of middle aged and elderly individuals with impaired glucose metabolism and memory dysfunction.”
“The use of PS and A-GPC, accompanied with exercise and weight loss, may offer tremendous mental support to diabetics as well as the overweight and obese,” said Scott Hagerman, president of Chemi Nutraceuticals. PS and A-GPC are two specialty nutraceuticals found in dietary supplements, and are both supported by well-documented research showing that they can help maintain and prevent cognitive impairment, and may provide real help to those individuals with an impaired ability to use glucose effectively.
Chemi Nutra is the US branch of parent company Chemi S.p.A., a privately held pharmaceutical and nutraceutical company based in Milan, Italy. Chemi, with cGMP certified manufacturing facilities in Italy and Brazil, is best known in the US nutritional arena for its introduction of phosphatidylserine (PS), the popular dietary supplement used to enhance learning, memory, and concentration.
