in-cosmetics Asia 2009, the leading exhibition and conference in Asia for personal care ingredients, will host Asia’s first hands-on Cosmetic Regulations and Safety Assessment Workshop on Thursday 15 October. Essential for R&D, regulatory and technical specialists, it provides a full review of Asian regulations along with practical demonstrations on assessing product safety in accordance with the recent ASEAN Cosmetic Directive.
On 1 January 2008, the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive came into force, with far-reaching implications for companies operating in the region. The workshop’s interactive safety sessions, led by the renowned Dr Alain Khaiat and Dr. Bashkar Mukerji, toxicology manager, Johnson & Johnson Asia Pacific, will give delegates the opportunity to understand the intricacies of the new directive and how it will affect their company’s processes. Training will be given about the handling and selection of raw materials, how to read the safety data provided by suppliers and how to use this to evaluate the safety of the product.
Dr. Khaiat comments: “With the Cosmetic Directive now in force, companies have a set of unfamiliar policies that they must adhere to, including mandatory safety assessments. These are not always very well understood, as previous regulations were not compulsory. This has led to some uncertainty regarding raw ingredients and what must be done to ensure a product’s safety.
“The workshop has been designed to help clarify these safety concerns, and as such, is the first of its kind in Asia,” continues Dr. Khaiat. “It offers a unique opportunity for companies to increase their knowledge and awareness both of the existing Asian regulations and of the new ASEAN Directive. The presentations will demonstrate how a product is positioned as cosmetic, quasi drug or functional cosmetic and the implications for each listing as well as preparing organisations for product expansion in other countries where such regulations already exist.”
