An initial discussion of an amino sugar from a new source will take place at the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes's meeting on 25 March. The Food Standards Agency has received an application from Cargill for an opinion on the equivalence of glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl) derived from the fungi Aspergillus niger. Glucosamine HCl is a naturally occurring amino sugar, which is found largely in cartilage and is used as a dietary supplement to support joint health. Glucosamine dietary supplements from shellfish waste are widely available in the European Union.
Cargill's proposed product is a glucosamine HCl called REGENASURE™ obtained from Aspergillus niger. It is the first glucosamine that is not obtained from shellfish waste. Cargill has requested an opinion from the Food Standards Agency on the basis that the product should be treated as substantially equivalent to the existing glucosamine HCl derived from shellfish.
Any comments on this application should be sent to the ACNFP Secretariat by 20 March 2004 and will be passed to the Committee before it finalises its opinion on this application. |
