FortiFeed® Short-Chain Fructooligosaccharides (scFOS®) Meets the Newly Adopted Definition
GOLDEN, Colorado, Wednesday, January 25, 2006 – GTC Nutrition, a business unit of Corn Products International, Inc., announced today that the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has adopted an official definition of “fructooligosaccharide” and that FortiFeed® scFOS® meets the AAFCO definition. The new definition will be included as part of the 2006 Official AAFCO Publication and ensures that only products that meet the definition can be labeled as fructooligosaccharides on AAFCO-compliant product labels.
“We have conducted more than 200 scientific studies and field trials with scFOS to demonstrate its safety and efficacy,” said Bart Dunsford, Ph.D., senior account manager – animal nutrition for GTC Nutrition. “The official feed definition of fructooligosaccharide further strengthens the value and benefits of this ingredient to the animal feed producers in the U.S.”
FortiFeed® scFOS® is a natural, indigestible carbohydrate ingredient composed of short-chain fructose units bound by a beta-linked terminal glucose unit. The ingredient has numerous value-added applications in both pet foods and commercial animal feed. It has been widely used in Europe and Asia in feeds for pets and commercial animals such as swine, poultry, horses, calves, and rabbits.
“I’m pleased that AAFCO has adopted an official definition of fructooligosaccharides,” said George Fahey, Ph.D., professor of animal science at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. “This new definition gives the industry another tool to improve animal health and performance through the use of FortiFeed scFOS, a product that clearly meets this new AAFCO definition.”
