Role of Omega-3s on Age-Related Cognitive Conditions Explored
LYSAKER, Norway (May 15, 2006) - EPAX AS, a world leading supplier of highly-concentrated Omega-3 EPA/DHA fatty acid concentrates, today announced that its two education events that focused on new scientific research surrounding Omega-3s at the Vitafoods International Tradeshow and Conference held in Geneva May 9 – 11, 2006, were a complete success. The highly-credentialed Omega-3 experts, Yvonne Freund-Levi, MD, and Malcolm R. Garland MD, MRCPI, MRCPsych, DPM, discussed the findings of their studies that measured the impact of EPAX Omega-3 highly concentrated fish oils, specifically, on age-related health conditions and psychiatric disorders.
Dr. Freund-Levi, senior consultant and specialist in psychiatry and geriatrics at the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden, presented, "Omega-3 and Alzheimer's Dementia," on May 9 in the Supplier Seminar Theatre. The public seminar focused on a new study showing the effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Freund-Levi's presentation discussed the positive effects on cognition in human trials using EPAX 1050 marine Omega-3 concentrate. This study will be published later this year.
Dr. Garland, a clinical and research psychiatrist from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, led a luncheon discussion on, "The Role of Omega-3 for a Healthy Mind," at the EPAX AS stand on May 10. Dr. Garland presented research on evolutionary aspects of human diet as applied to fat intake and explored the role of n-3 EFA supplementation in supporting mental health.
"The presentations by Drs. Freund-Levi and Garland were extremely insightful," said Bjorn Refsum, CEO of EPAX AS. "The research that was discussed by these two highly respected medical professionals emphasizes the important role Omega-3s play in the human mind. We are honoured that they selected EPAX oils for use in the studies."
This year's Vitafoods show saw a 21 percent increase in attendance over last year's show and marked the ninth time EPAX AS exhibited.
EPAX AS is headquartered in Lysaker, Norway and has a GMP-approved production facility in Alesund, Norway, which is approved for API production by the Norwegian Medicines Agency. EPAX AS offers ultra pure, highly concentrated, Omega-3 EPA/DHA oils in the business-to- business segment under the brand name EPAX, available in a wide range of top quality formulas with different EPA/DHA ratios focused on specific health conditions.
