On June 4th, 2009, it was announced that the EFSA had rendered a positive opinion on the safety of Albion’s Manganese Bisglycinate Chelate to be used as a source of manganese in dietary or food supplements. Using the highest proposed use level of 5mg/day of manganese from Manganese Bisglycinate Chelate considered in this opinion, the Panel noted that the total anticipated exposure to manganese from food intake and from supplements would be 6.4 – 9.9 mg/day at the mean and 9.8 – 13.2 mg/day at the 97.5th percentile for adults. For children 3-14 years old, the total anticipated exposure to manganese from food intake and supplements would be 6.8 – 7.2 mg/day at the mean, and 8.9 – 9.2 mg/day at the 97.5th percentile. The Panel concluded that taking 4 mg of manganese as Manganese Bisglycinate Chelate routinely as a supplement was of no safety concern. This brings a total of six (6) Bisglycinate Chelate minerals, so far, from Albion which have had positive opinions and approvals rendered by the EFSA: Calcium, Magnesium, Iron (Ferrochel®), Zinc, Copper, and now Manganese. The Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, and Zinc Bisglycinate Chelates have been approved for use in both food or dietary supplements, as well as in foods for particular nutritional purposes, and the Copper and Manganese Bisglycinate Chelates as a source of those minerals in food or dietary supplements. The Iron or Ferrous Bisglycinate Chelate (Ferrochel®) has additional approvals for use in foods intended for general populations, as well as in foods intended for infants and young children. The Bisglycinate Chelates are all under the TRAACS™ brand of Albion’s patented mineral amino acid chelates. |
