Label Quickly Notifies Consumer of Carbs Impacting Blood Glucose Levels
GOLDEN, Colo., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- David R. Lumley, president and CEO,
announced today that EAS has launched a new "impact carb" information section
on all of its reduced carbohydrate nutrition bar labels to help consumers
quickly identify bars that will have a minimal impact on their blood glucose
levels. The new labels will appear on EAS' AdvantEdge(R) Carb Control(TM) and
Myoplex(R) Carb Sense(TM).
The new labels were designed to comply with the FDA's interpretation of
the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act instructing all makers of low-carb
bars to include the carbohydrate content of low-glycemic ingredients -- those
used to lower sugar content and improve texture, like glycerin -- in the total
carb count on the nutrition facts panel.
"As a leader in the industry, EAS wanted to use this change as an
opportunity to make a difference in the lives of consumers who are concerned
about carbohydrate consumption," stated Lumley. "While the calculation and
explanation is simple, the importance of this message plays a large role in
the lives of many who maintain a low-carbohydrate lifestyle."
In a new section called "Important Carbohydrates Information," which is
prominently featured beside the "Nutrition Facts" panel, EAS clearly displays
the number of impact carbs that impact blood glucose levels. The number is
determined by subtracting the low-glycemic ingredients (glycerin and Dietary
Fiber) from the total carb count.
In addition, EAS also is providing information within the section on what
is and is not an impact carb. It reads:
"This bar delivers 3 grams of IMPACT CARBS. IMPACT CARBs including sugars
and starches, are the carbohydrates that have a significant impact on insulin
and blood glucose levels and should be monitored as part of your Low-Carb
Lifestyle. OTHER CARBS, including glycerin and Dietary Fiber, have minimal
impact on blood sugar levels. 'Total Carbohydrates' in the Nutrition Facts
box includes DIETARY FIBER, IMPACT CARBS and OTHER CARBS."
About EAS
Based in Golden, Colo., EAS is recognized as the industry leader in active
lifestyle nutrition products for elite athletes and active individuals. EAS
distributes products domestically and internationally through direct sales and
approximately 60,000 retail outlets.
