Natural Ingredient's Unique History and Immune Enhancing Properties Highlighted
PUYALLUP, Wash., July 6, 2006 — Alexander Schauss, Ph.D., FACN, will discuss the results of his study that examined the correlation between the unusually low sick rates of a controlled population of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, factory employees and their exposure to an edible fermentation product at the 14th Annual International Congress on Anti-Aging Medicine. Dr. Schauss's presentation, "Discovery of a Novel Natural Ingredient with Unusual Immune Enhancing Properties," will take place on Friday, July 14 from 3:50 – 4:50 p.m. in room #27 of the Stephens Convention Center, Chicago. The edible fermentation ingredient used in Dr. Shauss's study, EpiCor(tm), is manufactured by Embria(tm) Health Sciences, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
"This ingredient's positive impact on the human immune system is of particular interest to the aging population because of their increased susceptibility to chronic and infectious diseases," stated Dr. Schauss. Alexander G. Schauss, Ph.D., FACN, is director of natural and medicinal products research for the AIBMR Life Sciences, Inc., www.aibmr.com, in Puyallup, Wash., where he has been the lead scientist for 27 years. A former clinical professor of natural products research and associate professor of research at two academic institutions, he is currently adjunct research professor of botanical medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. He has served on several NIH advisory councils, been a reviewer of botanical monographs for the U.S. Pharmacopeia Convention (USP) and the International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS) database maintained through an interagency partnership with the Food and Nutrition Information Center, National Agricultural Library, NIH Office of Dietary Supplements and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Dr. Schauss has studied nutrition and botanical medicine for more than 30 years and was recently recognized by the American College for the Advancement of Medicine for his contributions to the medical sciences with the 2005 Linus Pauling Lecture Award. He has been the author/co- author of more than 100 scientific papers in a diverse range of journals, and recently completed his twelfth book, on the subject of intra-abdominal obesity in males. Dr. Schauss earned his undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque and California Coast University in Santa Ana, respectively.
