The Food and Drug Administration announced that it has finalized a rule that allows foods containing barley to claim that they reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. whole grain barley and dry milled barley products such as flakes, grits, flour, and pearled barley, which provide at least 0.75 grams of soluble fiber per serving, may bear the following claim: ""Soluble fiber from foods such as [name of food], as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A serving of [name of food] supplies [x] grams of the soluble fiber necessary per day to have this effect."

This 2-day workshop is being convened to engage expert research scientists and nutrition practitioners from government, academia, and industry in discussion on issues related to knowledge gaps and research needs in developing and advancing the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). A synopsis of the overall project is attached to this e-mail message. If you have not already preregistered, please do so at www.iom.edu/DRIresearchWorkshop . Release of a summary of the workshop is anticipated in September 2006. Please note that a simulcast of the workshop will not be available; however, audio files of the sessions will be posted on the project website within a few weeks following the workshop.
The final workshop agenda is attached along with a one-page synopsis of the project. Please note that a one-hour session for public comments is scheduled for 4:45–5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7. Please contact Janice Okita [JOkita@nas.edu , 202 334 1390, or fax 202 334 2316] to prearrange to provide up to 3 minutes of comment during this period. If you are unable to attend the workshop, your comments sent via e-mail or fax will be read to the workshop audience, as time allows.
Database— In conjunction with this workshop a database was developed to provide ready access to the research recommendations from the eight DRI reports. The database is available at the project website [www.iom.edu/DRIresearch2006]. The database has been released in preliminary form for comment. Please send comments to JOkita@nas.edu or DRIresearch2006@nas.edu before August 1, 2006. Release of the database in final form is anticipated in September 2006.
