MINNEAPOLIS – Cargill Health & Food Technologies (H&FT) will promote its heart healthy line of functional ingredients at the Health Ingredients Europe (HiE) 2004 Conference, Nov. 16-18 in Amsterdam.
“Delivering heart healthy ingredient solutions to customers is integral to our health platforms strategy,” said Ted Ziemann, president, Cargill H&FT. “An estimated 17 million people worldwide die of cardiovascular disease each year and clearly we need to continue to develop new, innovative ingredients that can help make a variety of foods become part of a heart-healthy lifestyle.”
Cargill Health & Food Technologies markets health-promoting ingredients targeting a number of health platforms including: heart health, bone/joint health, lower carbohydrate, and weight management. Heart healthy ingredients include:
• CoroWise™ plant sterols – is clinically proven to reduce LDL cholesterol and a U.S. Food and Drug Administration heart health claim is available for use on a wide variety of foods, beverages and dietary supplement applications • Prolisse™ soy protein isolate – is an exceptionally neutral tasting soy protein product (90 percent protein) resulting from innovative, patented processing technology and offers excellent solubility and a smoother mouthfeel. • Prolisse™ Soy Crunch™ soy protein crisp – is available in a range of protein levels (60-80 percent), sizes and ingredient variations to suit your unique product and consumer needs. The clean flavor is ideal for nutrition bars, snack and bakery applications. • Barley betafiber – is a high purity (70 percent) beta-glucan soluble fiber with optimal viscosity, which allows formulation into foods without the issues historically associated with high viscosity beta-glucans. Cargill’s proprietary health-benefit research, including pre-clinical and clinical studies, which will be completed in November 2004, documents barley betafiber’s efficacy in supporting heart health, as part of a diet low in fat and cholesterol. Sample quantities are available only.
“This is an exciting time for Cargill as many of our breakthrough ingredients are becoming readily available to consumers around the world,” said Jim Kappas, director of international and emerging products, Cargill H&FT. “We drive our global health business through collaborative efforts with customers in many areas of product development, such as applications, regulatory and consumer insights. We look forward to continuing to develop collaborations with leading food and beverage manufacturers outside of the United States to broaden the range of functional products marketed around the world,” said Kappas. Cargill’s H&FT business is part of a larger Cargill initiative called Food System Design. As part of Food System Design, Cargill Health & Food Technologies works in concert with customers to produce ingredients, ingredient systems and food system breakthroughs that result in appetizing, nutritious and convenient consumer products.
