MINNEAPOLIS - Cargill Health & Food Technologies (H&FT) announced today that it has self-affirmed the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status of its OptaFlex™ chondroitin sulfate through an independent evaluation by an expert panel of respected scientists. The GRAS status permits chondroitin to be used in a variety of foods and beverages.
Joint pain is the No. 1 chronic health condition in the United States. Chondroitin has been shown to help promote healthy joints. Cargill's OptaFlex™ chondroitin is a natural proprietary form of chondroitin sulfate that is produced from a water-based process. Cargill is announcing a new, performance-grade OptaFlex™ chondroitin that is 100 percent water soluble for use by beverage manufacturers.
“The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicts that by the year 2020 about 60 million people will be affected by arthritis,” said Ted Ziemann, president of Cargill H&FT. “GRAS status of OptaFlex™ chondroitin creates an advantage for food and beverage manufacturers because they can now meet the growing consumer demand for joint-health solutions.”
