Australian Complementary Medicines Evaluation Committee Recommends Lutein as Suitable Active Ingredient

Home
The Complementary Medicines Evaluation Committee has made the following recommendation to the Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration):

Recommendation 33.2

CMEC recommends to the TGA that lutein is suitable for use as an active ingredient in listable therapeutic goods, provided that it is stabilised to minimise degradation.

Previously the only source of lutein permitted was as a component of a "herbal substance". This recommendation means that lutein may be used as an ingredient in its own right, and the ingredient does not have to be a "herbal substance".

If this recommendation is adopted by the TGA, lutein can be used in listed medicines once the official notice appears in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette - Government Notices.
