- New Studies On B-Vitamins Not the Final Word
Findings from two new studies (HOPE-2 and NORVIT) on vitamins B-6, B-12 and folate supported the conclusions of a vast body of scientific research which shows that these vitamins help lower homocysteine levels, but failed to support the hypothesis that lowering homocysteine levels in persons who already have cardiovascular disease (CVD) will provide protection against a future cardiovascular event.

- Fish oil may help protect against retinal degenerative diseases
Invited paper published in Trends in Neuroscience reports on the role that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil play in protecting cells in the retina from degenerative diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. According to the researchers, DHA is a precursor to neuroprotectin D1 (NPD1), a major neuroprotective compound, and DHA is found to promote protective cell signaling as well as stimulating the production of NPD1.

- High Polyunsaturated Fat And Vitamin E Intake May Halve Motor Neurone Disease Risk
According to research involving 132 patients with potential or definite amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with data compared to 220 healthy people, and published in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, a high dietary intake of polyunsaturated fat and vitamin E seems to halve the risk of developing motor neurone disease. According to the researchers, The highest daily intake of PUFA of more than 32 g was associated with a 60% lower risk of developing ALS compared with the lowest daily intake of less than 25 g, and a daily vitamin E intake of between 18 and 22 mg was associated with a 60% lower risk of developing ALS compared with the lowest daily intake of less than 18 mg.

The antioxidant properties of hydroxymatairesinol (HM-3000) were studied in vitro in lipid peroxidation, superoxide and peroxyl radical scavenging, and LDL-oxidation models in comparison with the known synthetic antioxidants Trolox (a water-soluble vitamin E derivative), butylated hydroxyanisol (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). On a molar basis HM-3000 was a more effective antioxidant than Trolox in all assays and more effective than BHT or BHA in . . . |
