DECATUR, Ill., -- Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) announced today that it has been awarded a U.S. patent for a range of unique nutraceutical compositions with broad application in supplements, functional foods and other nutraceutical products.

ADM was awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,261,565, titled "Method of Preparing and Using Isoflavones." Invented by ADM scientists, this patent covers plant- derived compositions enriched with at least two phytochemicals (plant-derived chemicals) from a group consisting of isoflavones, lignans, saponins, catechins and phenolic acids. The combination of these phytochemicals with foods, supplements or other nutraceuticals has the potential to provide greater health benefits than can be achieved from single, uncombined supplements.

ADM's Novasoy(R) dietary supplement contains soy isoflavones and other phytochemicals that have been shown to help maintain cardiovascular, prostate and bone health, as well as overall health for women during and after menopause. There are currently over 100 supplement and functional food products that contain Novasoy isoflavones as an active ingredient.

"This is an extremely important patent for ADM, creating a highly valuable and wide-ranging proprietary position in the nutraceutical market," said G. Allen Andreas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Archer Daniels Midland. "Nutraceuticals are a rapidly growing part of ADM and support our mission of unlocking nature's potential. This patent is the result of our ongoing commitment to research and development of natural-source ingredients that promote health and well being. It paves the way for a much greater involvement in the development of new foods, supplements and other nutraceutical products."
