Allison Hill reported new research findings on adjunct supplementation with fish oil in obese or overweight subjects (25 – 65 years old) assigned to a regular exercise regimen. Body compositions as increased by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry revealed that the only group to exhibit a significant reduction in % body fat was that combining exercise with fish oil supplementation. This improvement appeared to reflect an enhanced fat oxidation during exercise.

- Appeals Court Rules for FDA in Ephedra Ban: Overturns Lower Court Finding in Nutraceutical v. von Eschenbach
A three-judge panel of the 10th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled yesterday in favor of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a case that had challenged the agency's 2004 prohibition of any level of ephedrine in dietary supplements. "The evidence in the administrative record was sufficiently probative to demonstrate by a preponderance of the evidence that EDS [ephedrine dietary supplements] at any dose level pose an unreasonable risk. The greater weight of the evidence supports the FDA’s ban on EDS, thus satisfying the agency's burden."

BALTIMORE, MD (August 16, 2006) – The 12th Annual Socially Responsible Business Awards (SRBA) will be presented at a free breakfast event open to all Natural Products Expo East attendees on Friday, October 6, 2006, from 8:00 – 9:30 am at the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, MD. The keynote speaker will be long-time SRBA supporter Michael Funk, who has resumed his role as CEO of leading natural foods distributor United Natural Foods (UNFI). Mr. Funk will speak about the state of our industry and the issues it faces moving forward,
This annual event, held in conjunction with Natural Products Expo East and open to all members of the natural products industry, honors the highest human ideals applied to business practices. SRBA recipients demonstrate exceptional track records in ethics, accountability, governance, employment practices, business relationships, financial return, products and services, community involvement and environmental protection. The keynote speaker is always a business leader at the forefront of the socially responsible business movement, and this year’s speaker is no exception.
Michael Funk founded Mountain People’s Warehouse, a natural products distributor, in 1976. As one of the pioneers of the natural products industry, he built that company into a leading regional natural foods wholesaler while maintaining the values upon which the company was founded. In early 1996, Funk and Norman Cloutier, founder of east-coast based natural foods distributor Cornucopia, joined their organizations together to form United Natural Foods, the largest national natural-foods distributor in the US. They took the company public in November of that year.
The event will also feature a live musical performance by Spirit Voyage recording artist Snatam Kaur.
Golden Temple Bakery, the manufacturer of Peace Cereals; Sunshine Spa and Soothing Touch Health and Beauty Products; and the Yogi Tea Company sponsor the annual breakfast event. Co-sponsors of the 2006 SRBA event to date include NOW Foods Dr. Bronners, White Wave, Guayaki, New Hope Natural Media, John Beske Communications, The Shelton Group PR and Dagoba Organic Chocolates.
Sponsorship opportunities for the 2006 event are still available. For more information, please contact Jill Ettinger, jillettinger@mindspring.com
